In 1984 Daurene E. Lewis was elected mayor of Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. And was titled as the first black female mayor in North America. She also tried to join provincial politics in the election of 1988, but lost the bid to represent Annapolis West in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. Daurene has also won many awards including the Global Citizen Award from the United Nations 50th Anniversary Canada Committee, Doctor of Humane Letter from the Mount Saint Vincent University and is listed in the list of 100 Black Canadians of influence. Dr. Lewis always tries hard to make life easier and healthier for all Nova Scotians. But that's just some things about her, check out these links for more on Daurene Lewis.
